Teenagers vs Hallyu

Nowadays,
Korean Waves is trending topic in Indonesia. This korean waves can be called
Hallyu. Korean Waves itself started for the first time when there is korean
drama “What is Love All About” emergence in China’s Tv in 1997. Korean Waves
means that the currence phenomenon of Korean culture in the form of drama,
movie and also korean music (K-Pop)which started spread to China, Taiwan, Japan
and another Southeast Asian country in 2000s. Then Hallyu not only to describe
the currence of popular culture, but fashion, cuisine and other creative
industries of South Korea can be put in terms of Hallyu. Hallyu itself has a
good influenceand bad influence for Indonesian youth. The bad effect of Hallyu
is the changes of Indonesian culture, the indonesian youth become fanatic to
all about Korean. Whereas the good influence for Indonesian youth because they
can learn English from subtitles in korean drama. Besides Hallyu or korean
waves has its own influence in the world of publishing even in blogging. Hallyu
also as an example for entertainer in Indonesia.
The bad
effect of hallyu is changing Indonesian culture especially for Indonesian
youth. Hallyu fanaticism led to the birth of a phenomenon in which the idol of
the domestic ginseng become a mecca of conduct for teenagers and young people
in the homeland in the process of establishing his identity. But the trouble in
this time is when the younger generation starts Indonesia indifferent to
traditional Indonesian culture and Korean culture prefers Indonesian cultural
rather than monotonous. Fanaticism Korean culture can
be characterized by the emergence of a lot of Korean food in Indonesia, besides
Korean style fashion trend is also very coveted by the teenagers and also nowadays
the genre of Indonesian music turned into the typical Korean boyband and
girlband. I think hallyu is not only seen
from the viewpoint the bad effect of hallyu but can also enrich the knowledge of
other cultures so that we can learn about the
culture there including language, food, etc..
In addition to the K-Pop especially
as the inspiration for Indonesian youth to
move forward.
Hallyu
not only have a
bad effect for Indonesian
teenagers but also
has good
influence for
Indonesian teenagers. The first good
influence of korean waves for Indonesian youth is to learn English from
subtitled in korean drama. Hallyu developed rapidly in Indonesia, we can
discover korean drama whether in DVD or on television. For those who want to
learn Korean and English, it’s better to watch the drama directly using the
Korean language and use English subtitle. Indirectly we will get a rare English
vocabulary that we find before, and we can translate it by yourself. Although
not all of the dialogue in the drama we can translate. For the example there is
a korean drama ‘Fashion King’ in the two verse, there are in DVD with Korean
language and English subtitle and also an national television has been dubbed
using Indonesian. “If someone who is already accustomed to watching the drama
that ‘original’, their ears will be
familiar with the language used in drama. And would find it strange if they
hear a voice of the drama dubbed by
using Indonesian” (Talin Salisah, 2012).
Beside
to adding capability in our English, Hallyu was also influential in the world
of publishing and blogging. Which is now beganning to many Publishers who
publishs novels, teenlits, or book in which all the information about the idol
that many young people likes and loved, it as a trigger for them to be more
creative. There was a wave of non-original and korean like novels flooding
market. Domestic writers that loves korean style and culture began producing
books using korean titles, featuring characters with korean names, stories with
korean setting. It looks like everything related to Korea is loved. Whereas in
blogging, fanfiction is currently become trending topic when we told about
Korea. “Fanfiction is what literature might look
like if it were reinvented from scratch after a nuclear apocalypse by a band of
brilliant pop-culture junkies trapped in a sealed bunker. They don't do it for
money. That's not what it's about. The writers write it and put it up online
just for the satisfaction. They're fans, but they're not silent, couchbound
consumers of media. The culture talks to them, and they talk back to the
culture in its own language.” (Lev
Grossman, July 18, 2011). The other good
influence is as an example for the entertainer in Indonesia. The Hallyu viewed
positively by some production house. Because the famous music in Korean is
boyband and girlband, so there are many production houses vying for the 'spawn'
boyband and girlband although they arguably less talent. The first boyband in
Indonesia is SM*SH who have 7 members and for the girlband is 7icons.
We
already know the bad and the good influence
of hallyu. All
of the above explanation
about Hallyu for
Indonesian teenagers that have a positive impact for them. We can follow the example of Korean culture, although
this era is
the era of globalization, they still maintain
their culture. Therefore
even if hallyu is
currently a trending topic in
Indonesia, we should not to forget
our native culture, we have to preserve it
as they are.
